During the CHHF (Carolina Honduras Health Foundation) October 2018 medical mission trip to Honduras, we went to several villages including Plan de Flores, not far from Limón. Our medical providers, two MDs, two NPs, a pharmacist, a lab tech and several nurses and other volunteers set up a temporary clinic inside the village church. While there, I noticed a patient I had seen on a mission trip a year earlier. His name is Raul. He has diabetes and had run out of medicine two months earlier. Raul was not feeling well when he arrived. After Raul was seen by Dr. McCutcheon and had received his prescription meds from Julie, our pharmacist, I talked with him. He speaks with a strong accent. He may have grown up in the mountains of Lempira Department where a heavy accent is spoken.
Following is a transcription of the two minute conversation video with Raul:
Ed: Señor, how are you?
Raul: Very well.
Ed: What is your name?
Raul: Raul Bonilla.
Ed: Nice to meet you Raul. Where do you live?
Raul: I live at Salado Arriba.
Ed: How far away is your house from here?
Raul: A lot but I don’t know how far. It is two hours walking to my house.
Ed: Do you need a horse?
Raul: Yes. I need a horse.
Ed: Do you have a horse?
Raul: Yes, I have a horse.
Ed: Where is your horse?
Raul: I have him on the other side.
Ed: Do you use your horse to go to work?
Raul: Where I work is close. I don’t need the beast to go to work. When I get home is the job I have.
Ed: Did you see the doctor today?
Raul: We had to look for the doctor. Yes, I came to see the doctor for medicine.
Ed: Do you have your medicine now?
Raul: Yes, I have my medicine with me now. Today, I start taking my medicine.
Ed: Did you take some today?
Raul: Yes.
Ed: Do you feel better now?
Raul: Yes. We have to feel better with the medicine.
Ed: Your medicine is in your bag?
Raul: yes.
Ed: Good, thank you for your time. Have a good day.
Raul: Good.
Ed: Until later.
Raul: Yes, later.
